1 DO NOW #7 Sept. 5th, 2018 FIRST FIVE CHECK PICK UP MATERIALS.
1. Name the four properties of water. 2. Describe water’s special structure. 3. What is the difference between an observation and an inference? 4. What is a red tide? 5. Which contaminant was the most harmful in our watershed study? FIRST FIVE CHECK PICK UP MATERIALS. FIND SEAT. ORGANIZE DESK AND PREPARE FOR THE DAY. WRITE DOWN HOMEWORK. BEGIN DO NOW.

2 DO NOW #7 Which contaminant was the most harmful in our watershed study? Fertilizer was the most harmful contaminant in our watershed study. What is a red tide? A red tide is a toxic algal bloom. What is the difference between an observation and an inference? An observation is a detail gathered by the five senses. An inference is an explanation or guess derived from observations. Describe water’s special structure. Water looks like Mickey Mouse. The head is a negative oxygen atom and the ears are positive hydrogen atoms. Name the four properties of water. The four properties of water are: Cohesion/Adhesion, High Specific Heat, Expansion Upon Freezing, and Universal Solvent

3 VERBAL DRILLS Independent Variable… Dependent Variable… Water is a ___________ molecule. Water has _______________ bonds. Chemical Formula for Water? What is our class motto?

4 Properties of Water and Biogeochemical Cycles
Ms. Parton Environmental Science

5 Water Review What has a special structure…

6 Water Review Because of this special structure water is considered to be a POLAR molecule. Polar means having opposite ends. Water’s opposite ends are hydrogen (positive) and oxygen (negative).

7 Water Review OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Because of this, the positive hydrogens and negative oxygen are ATRRACTED TO EACH OTHER. This attraction forms bonds between the atoms and between adjacent water molecules. These bonds are called HYDROGEN BONDS.

8 Water Review Because of the special structure that causes the polarity, and the polarity that causes the hydrogen bonds - water is a special molecule with special properties.

9 Water Review Four Special Properties of Water
Cohesive/Adhesive Behavior Cohesive (Water sticks to itself.) Adhesive (Water sticks to other things). High Specific Heat Water warms and cools slower than other substances. Expansion Upon Freezing Hydrogen bonds stretch when water freezes causing ice to be less dense than liquid water – so it floats. Universal Solvent Water molecules can dissolve or pull apart other molecules. Polar dissolves polar.

10 But how does this help life?
Watch the videos and jot down how each of the four properties of water helps life.

13 Work Period Get out a blank sheet of paper. Title the paper Properties of Water Investigation. Put your name, date, and class period in the proper location. Activity #1: Water Lab Complete each station. Answer the questions on the paper. Activity #2: Water Article Read the article. Answer the questions on the paper. C – Level 1, H – Ask three then me!, A – Complete the article and the stations. M – Only when at the lab stations and when it is time to switch. P – Pencils moving, conversations on task, participating in lab safety. SUCCESS!

14 Exit Ticket #7 How does understanding water’s life giving properties relate to our case study about the red tide? Write at least 5 complete sentences.

15 Word dissection What does the suffix –sphere mean? ROUND 3-D OBJECT (EARTH) What does the prefix Hydro- mean? WATER What does the prefix Atmos- mean? VAPOR/AIR What does the prefix Bio- mean? LIFE What does the prefix Cryo- mean? COLD What does the prefix Geo- mean? EARTH/LAND

16 Word Dissection So then what do these words mean…
Hydrosphere means – ALL WATER ON EARTH Atmosphere means – ALL AIR/VAPOR AROUND EARTH Biosphere means – ALL LIVING THINGS ON EARTH Cryosphere means – ALL FROZEN PARTS ON EARTH Geosphere means – ALL LAND ON EARTH

17 BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES
More Dissection…. BIO – living things GEO – land/earth CHEMICAL – interaction of substances CYCLES – circular motion The circulation of nutrients through the biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere

18 Water Cycle

19 Water Cycle Evaporation – water changing from liquid to a gas (water vapor) Transpiration – water released from plants to the atmosphere Precipitation – water returning from the atmosphere to the geosphere Condensation – water changing from a gas to a liquid Run off Water – water going along the surface to a larger body of water Ground water – water found underground

20 Carbon Cycle

21 Carbon Cycle Photosynthesis – plants take Carbon Dioxide in to create food Respiration – plants and animals give off Carbon Dioxide to atmosphere Combustion – the process of burning organic materials to release carbon into the atmosphere Decomposition – organic materials breaking down and releasing carbon into the geosphere Diffusion – small amounts of organic carbon falling back into hydrosphere and geosphere

22 Carbon Sink vs. Carbon Sources
Carbon Sink – ways carbon is stored without being reintroduced into the atmosphere What are some examples? Carbon Sources – ways carbon is moved into the atmosphere When the Carbon cycle is in balance these are roughly equal What are some examples that they would be out of balance? Which do you think is currently happening? Explain
