6th Grade World Cultures

2 Cartographer A person who makes maps

3 Physical Relating to the surface of the earth- the landforms, glaciers, rivers, oceans etc…

4 Political The way the earth is marked up into countries by man made boundaries.

5 Thematic Map A map that shows a particular theme, or topic, such as population or economy of an area.

6 More Thematic Maps

7 Compass Rose A tool on a map showing cardinal (N, S, E, W) and intermediate (NE, NW, SE, SW) directions.

8 Cardinal Directions Four main parts of a compass rose: NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST

9 Intermediate Directions
The points of a compass rose that fall between the four cardinal points (e.g. Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest)

10 Key/Legend An explanation of the symbols used on a map

11 Scale The relationship between the distance on a map and the actual distance on Earth’s surface

12 Elevation The height of land above sea level

13 Title A title of a map is the name or subject of the map.

22 What is a Country? A nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory WITHIN A CONTINENT.

23 What is a State/Territory?
A territory considered as an organized political community under one government. A territory is an area of land under the jurisdiction of a ruler or state

24 What is a City/Town? A place where people live that is larger or more important than a town : an area where many people live and work WITHIN A STATE/TERRITORY.
