In Arabia, art was quite important
In Arabia, art was quite important. Pottery, glass, metalwork, textiles and woodwork were commonly enjoyed. Arabia took many ideas from India and China adding to their own tremendous knowledge. England at this time was very influenced by religion. Buildings, artwork and literature (writing) were all based on the teachings of Christianity.

In Arabia, family was very important, and clans could have hundreds of people in them. Because Arabians were nomads, clans moved around searching for places to find food and water. In England, families tended to be much smaller. If a family was poor, they would do unpaid work for barons in return for a place to live.

In England, poor people would work on land that was not their own. Most people were poor, and farming was the most common job. In Arabia, jobs ranged from herders of cattle to market traders. Because families were nomadic, farming was more difficult.

In England, trade (buying and selling things) was done locally. The Crusades (the topic we are looking at) meant that new products were beginning to be imported (brought in) from other countries. In Arabia, transport by sea was very important. In Arabia, travel to distant lands was common, and things like paper were introduced much sooner than in England.

England was Christian and wanted to spread Christianity to the rest of Europe and beyond. Most of English life was dominated and influenced by Christianity. Large areas of Arabia, including the holy city of Jerusalem were Islamic and the people were Muslims. Jerusalem was seen as a very holy place by both the Christians and the Muslims.
