Second Grade Math ~ SSS MA.2A.4.1 Extending number patterns to build a foundation for understanding multiples and factors. Jeannine Johannes 1/28/2010

2 Make patterns with numbers, such as:
Extend number patterns, such as: Skip count, like this: , Who do we appreciate? We will learn to …. Explain that ‘extend’ means that you will fill in the missing numbers at the end of the pattern. Skip count.. Sing the 2, 4, 6, 8 song with the class and skip count by 5s aloud with the class.

10 What are the missing numbers on this number line?
| | | | | | | | | | __ __ 10 5 9 Excellent! Review

11 Look at the pattern below
What number does the pattern start with? What do we have to do to the first number to get to the second number? What do we have to do to the second number to get to the third number? Do we have to do the same thing to each number to get to the next number? If the answer is YES, then we have a RULE, which is ….

12 ADD 1 Now that we know the rule we can EXTEND the pattern.
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ Prompt the class to figure out what the next numbers will be by adding once.

13 Let’s go ONLINE to do work with number patterns
Let’s go ONLINE to do work with number patterns. Click anywhere on the graph below. Click anywhere on the number graph to access a the interactive number graph. Click on the down arrow next to ‘start control’ to make the graph begin at zero instead of 1. Ask the students to remind you of the rule for the number pattern on the previous slide. Tell the students you are going to ‘color’ each number in the pattern green. (click on small green square below number) Proceed to ‘color’ each number in the first row green. Then ask the students to think of another ‘rule’. (add 2) May need prompting. Ask the students what the next number after zero will be if you add 2. ‘Color’ the zero and the 2 red. Now tell them, ‘we are creating a new pattern by using this new rule.’ So far, our new pattern is 0 and two. Ask the students what the next number in the pattern will be if we add two. Color the 4 red. Continue this through the first row. Explain to the student that this pattern could go on and on. Skip count by 2s with them while pointing to the number with your mouse. Now you can show them something cool. Go back and recolor each number in the first row white. Go to the top right corner and click on the up arrow to make the ‘step control’ 2. This will show the new pattern. Skip count by twos aloud. Crickweb.co.uk. Retrieved February 14, 2010 from

14 NEW Rule ADD 2 Let’s EXTEND this pattern using the ADD 2 rule.
__ __ __ Prompt the class to add 2 to each number to figure out the next number. Sing 2, 4, 6, 8…. With the class.

15 WE NOW KNOW…. If we use the ADD 1 rule
we will get this pattern AND If we use the ADD 2 rule we will get this pattern We will spend the next few days thinking of more RULES so we can EXTEND more number patterns and do more SKIP COUNTING.

16 Let’s sing one right now!
We will…. COUNT PENNIES and other objects by skip counting. Go on a WEBQUEST to explore what we can do with our new counting skills. BLOG with our friends on the computer. Do COMPUTER activities. SING skip counting songs. Let’s sing one right now!
