Chapter 1 lesson 4 Mathematics and Science

2 Sunshine State Standards
Page 32 ,33, and 36 SC.7.N.1.1 Plan and carry out scientific investigation, collect and interpret data in charts, tables and graphics. Analyze information. MA MA.6.A.3.6

3 What math skills do scientists use?
Scientists use math every day Math skills that scientists use to collect data include estimation, accuracy, precision, and significant figures.

4 Estimation An approximation of a number based on reasonable assumptions NOT A GUESS Based on known information How many gum balls are in the jar? Now you can estimate Is that a guess or an estimation? What if I were to tell you that there are 25 gum balls at this line

5 Accuracy and Precision
Accuracy- how close a measurement is to the true or accepted value. Precision- how close a group of measurements are to each other. Be accurate and precise by using a high-quality and standardized tool. Measure carefully. Repeat measurement getting the same result each time.

6 Percent Error Percent error calculations are a way to determine how accurate an experimental value is. If you have a high percent error you likely have inaccurate results. Inaccurate results mean you probably did not measure correctly or the tool you used to measure is not working properly. If you have a low percent error you likely have accurate results.

7 Mean The numerical average of a set of data. Add all of given values then divide by the number of values you added. 20/ =20 5 = 4

8 Median Middle number of a set of data.
Must list data in sequential order Middle number is the median, if the set of data is even then the two middle numbers are averaged and that average is the median. What is the median?? 4

9 What is the mode for this data set?
The mode is the number that appears the most What is the mode for this data set?

10 Anomalous data a number in a data set that does not fit in with the rest. If you were measuring the growth of a plant and every week it grows 1-2 cm but then one week you measure a growth of 20 cm. 20 cm would be considered anomalous data. What can explain this change in measurement? Data collector error? Different tool?

11 Range The difference between the greatest and smallest value in a set of data 6-2= 4
