The Great Gatsby Day 1: Envisioning Nick’s Society

Take a minute to think it over. Write out your thoughts. Talk it out with your pod. Share your ideas with the class.

Fatherly Advice “‘Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had’” (Fitzgerald 1). What are your thoughts regarding this advice? Can you relate in any way?
4
Thought on Girls “I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (17). Why do you think Daisy said this about her daughter? What would have made her feel such a thing? Does this remain true in the 21st century?
5
The Green Light “I glanced…and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way…When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished” (21). Why do you think chapter 1 ends with a mysterious Gatsby sighting?
6
The Valley of Ashes and the Eyes
“[A] fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke…above the gray land…you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg” (23). These two symbols recur throughout the novel and need to be noticed when mentioned. What is the imagery here? How does this affect the reader? What feelings do you get from this image?
7
Myrtle’s True Self “I knew right away I made a mistake. He borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in, and never even told me about it” (35). What does this tell us about Myrtle’s character? How would you describe her?
8
Variety in Life “I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life” (35). What does this quote mean to you? Why does Nick stay through the entire afternoon/evening when he doesn’t want to be there in the first place?
9
Your Window “[L]ife is much more successfully looked at from a single window, after all” (4). This quote can be analyzed in many different ways. What does it mean to you? On the back of your sheet, explain your analysis of the above quote. In your window, create an illustration that shares those thoughts.
