Physics Lesson 2.1 – The Language of Motion

1. Physics is the study of matter and how it moves.
I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c) 1. Physics is the study of matter and how it moves. Newton Pendulum – just focus on how physics can explain why this moves the way that it does. Milky Way – Connect back to Space Unit. What is the galaxy that contains our solar system? How long ago did the Universe form? Physics can explain why all the stars in the Milky Way move the way they do.

2. The total amount an object moves can be described in two ways:
I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c) 2. The total amount an object moves can be described in two ways: a. Distance – a scalar quantity telling how much total “ground” an object has covered. A scalar is a number alone without a direction. Practice problem. Explain a coach starts at A and walks to B, then C, then D. Calculate the total distance covered. A to B: 35 yds B to C: 20 yds C to D: 40 yds Distance: 95 yds

A vector is a number with a direction
I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c) b. Displacement – a vector quantity that refers to how far an objects ends from where it started A vector is a number with a direction Practice problem. Explain a coach starts at A and walks to B, then C, then D. Calculate the displacement. Only compare where he/she starts with where he/she ends. Start: 60 yards End: 5 yards Displacement: 55 yards left

c. A student walks the pathway shown in the diagram to the right, determine: Distance: Displacement: Distance: = 12 meters Displacement: 0 meters

1. The rate at which an object moves is also described in two ways:
I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c) 1. The rate at which an object moves is also described in two ways: a. Speed – a scalar quantity telling how fast an object moves Does not include a direction. b. Velocity - a vector quantity telling how fast an object changes position. Must include a direction.

Velocity= displacement time Speed = distance time
I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c) Velocity= displacement time Speed = distance time

10
I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c)
Guided Practice 1. A cross country runner leaves school and runs 10 miles north and turns around, returning to school. What distance did the student run? What was the student’s displacement?

I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c)
Guided Practice 2. A car leaves Cleveland and drives 10 miles south to Shaw. It turns around and drives 5 miles north to Boyle. What was the distance that the car traveled and what is its displacement?
12
I can describe physics and terminology used to describe the motion of an object (kinematics). (2c)
Guided Practice 3. Using the values for displacement and distance determined in #2, what was the car’s velocity if the car was traveling for 1 hour?
