1 Data Analysis & Inquiry

2 Data Throughout an experiment many observations and measurements will be recorded – data. How can you make this information easier for someone else to understand when you go to share it? Charts Data Tables Graphs

3 Charts Charts list information in a neat format.
Macaroni and Cheese How much makes up 1 serving? How many carbohydrates does one serving contain? How many servings are in this container? If I ate 1 cups of macaroni and cheese, how much fat would I be consuming? 1 cup 31g 2 12g

4 Data Tables A table that creates a side by side comparison of the
data collected. What was the starting mass of this block of ice? How long was this experiment conducted for? How long does it take this block of ice to lose 50g? If the current rate of melt continues, how long would it take for this ice to reach 400g? 800 g 60 min 15 min 120 min

5 Graphs Graphs are picture representations of your data.
Components of a graph: Title – tells you clearly what the information is referring to: Rate of Ice Melt. Labels & Units – how was the information measured: time (min). Evenly Spaced Neat & Orderly Key

6 Types of Graphs 3 types: Bar graphs – use to compare definite quantities of different items. Line graphs – Used when the information represents a continuous process. Pie graphs – Allows you to compare one part of something as it relates to the whole.

7 Bar Graphs 22 students Single bar 6 Single bar 2 Multi-bar
Single Bar – Shows the entire count of students and their favorite sports. Multi-Bar – show a more detailed breakdown by gender and favorite sports How many total students took this survey? Which bar graph would be best to use for this information? How many students favorite sport is Basketball? How many girls liked softball? 22 students Single bar 6 Single bar 2 Multi-bar

8 Line Graphs 3 years Mon - 82 12-15 Wednesday
Multi-line – shows multiple pieces of information compared to each other over time. Single Line – shows a single piece of information over time. What was the interval between height recordings? Which age range saw the greatest increase in height? Which day had the highest high temperature? Which day had a low temperature of 65F? 3 years Mon - 82 12-15 Wednesday

9 Pie Graphs Pie graphs allow you to think of the whole amount of something with the parts that make it up. Allows you to represent information easily as a fraction or a percentage. What portion of the pie does: A = A + B + C = B + C + D + E + F = ¼ or 25% ½ or 50% ¾ or 75%
