1 The 13 English Colonies Aim – What are the 13 English Colonies? What was life like in these colonies?

2 New England Colonies Massachusetts Bay Colony (1630)
Puritans wanted to follow a more simple practice of Christianity.

3 Religious Persecution
Religious persecution was another reason why the Puritans came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. John Winthrop believed this colony would set an example for the world.

4 Governing the Colony Only stockholders who invested money in the Massachusetts Bay Company (MBC), had the right to vote. This was later changed and all men who were church members would be given the right to vote. Eventually male church members elected representatives to the General Court.

5 Connecticut (1636) Founded by Thomas Hooker Called their town Hartford
Hooker left Massachusetts because he believed the governors there had too much power.

6 Limited Government Fundamental Orders of Connecticut –
1) Gave right to vote to all male property owners. 2) Limited the Power of the Governor. 3) Expanded the idea of representative government in the English Colonies.

7 Rhode Island (1639) Founded by Roger Williams
Religious Tolerance – Letting others practice their own beliefs.

8 Speaking Out Among those who fled to Rhode Island for religious freedom was Anne Hutchinson. Hutchinson disagreed with certain religious sermons in Massachusetts and was questioned on her loyalty to God. Eventually Hutchinson was ordered out of the colony and fled to Rhode Island.

9 New Hampshire (1680) From Massachusetts, settlers fanned out toward the coast where they set up trading and fishing villages. The King made these coastal settlements into a separate colony called New Hampshire.

11 Middle Colonies Delaware (1638) New York (1664)
NY was originally called New Amsterdam and owned by the Dutch. Governed by Peter Stuyvesant. Patroons – Landowners of huge estates thrived in New Amsterdam.

12 New York (1664) Rivalry over trade and colonies grew between the English and the Dutch. English warships enter New Amsterdam’s harbor and take control of the settlement. New Amsterdam is renamed New York after the Duke of York.

13 New Jersey (1664) The Duke of York thought that New York was too big to govern. He gave some of the land to Lord Berkely and Sir George Carteret. They formed a proprietary colony (Land in return for yearly payment) They called this land New Jersey and rented it out to other colonists. 1702 – New Jersey becomes a royal colony, or a colony that is under direct control of the king.

14 Pennsylvania (1681) Founded by William Penn
Settled by the Quakers and Pennsylvania Dutch. The “Holy Experiment”, a model for religious freedom. Quakers believed ALL men and women are created equal.

15 Life in the Middle Colonies
Large areas of land set aside for farming Cash Crops – Wheat, Barley, and Rye Cattle and Pigs Small, scattered towns
