1 Physical & Chemical Changes

2 Physical Changes A Physical Change is when an object changes a physical property. A change in size, shape, texture, or state (phase). The object still is the same thing.

3 Examples of Physical Changes
Ripped Paper Boiling Water Cutting Hair Broken Brick

4 Chemical Changes A Chemical Change is a change in the chemical make-up of the object. The object becomes a new object. Something new is created.

5 Keys to Identifying a Chemical Change
Color change Temperature change Formation of a gas, bubbles, or odor. Formation of a precipitate.

6 Examples of Chemical Changes
Fireworks exploding An apple rotting Baked cookies Photosynthesis/Respiration Digestion Combustion (burning)

7 Is It a Physical or Chemical Change?
Burning House Chemical Melting Ice Physical Cutting Grass

8 Chemical Reaction -- A process in which some substances change into different substances.
Ex: Magnesium + Oxygen  Magnesium Oxide + =

9 Chemical Equations: Reactants Products Reactants – starting substance
On left of arrow Products – ending substance… what is produced. On right of arrow Reactants Products
