4*9 Force and Energy: Different Insights
WDYS??? (p448) . WDYT??? _____ and _____ are parts of “The Snake” that would be most thrilling. If the speed of “The Snake” remains the same, the ride would still be fun because _____.

4*9 Investigate (p448) Concept Map of Ch4
3
4*9 Investigate (p448) 6a) Same speed = same height, therefore _____ and _____. 6b) Because they have the same height, they have the same _____ and the same _____. 6c) The largest contact force is at the ________ of the circular loop.

4*9 Investigate (p448) 8. The thrills of a roller coaster comes from __________ NOT going at a constant speed!!!!!! __________ 9a) The carts have the same height, therefore have the same_____ at the top and the same _____ at the bottom. 9b) The cart with the _____ incline will get to the bottom faster.

4*9 Notes Scalars and Vectors
Scalar a number (size, magnitude) with NO direction EXAMPLE speed, distance, energy Vector a number (size, magnitude) AND direction EXAMPLE velocity, displacement, force
6
4*9 Notes 2. Adding Scalars and Vectors
Scalar Just add them—no biggie Vector Vector diagrams and math….. Vectors in the same direction—add In opposite directions –add the negative (subtract) At right angles—Pythagorean Theorem
7
4*9 Notes Vector Addition EXAMPLES: add the following vectors: (vector diagrams and math) a. 20 m/s north and 30m/s north b. 30 N Left and 40 N right c. 6 m/s/s left, and 8m/s/s up.

4. Energy – A Scalar Quantity
All energies are measured in joules At whatever point on the roller coaster, the total ME (=GPE+KE) is always the same due to the law of conservation of energy If two points on a roller coaster have the same height, then they have the same velocity, KE and GPE.
9
The ENERGY at any given point on the ride
In roller-coaster physics, ENERGY can tell you 3 things: The ENERGY at any given point on the ride GPE is dependent on height and GPE is GOLDEN!!! If any 2 points on the ride have the same height, then they will have the same speed, GPE, and KE

5. Force – A Vector Quantity (p453)
Force and Weight are measured in NEWTONS. On a straight incline, the FGravity and the FNormal always remain in fixed directions you are constantly speeding up you are constantly going in the same direction On a curved incline, the Fnormal is always changing direction and speed your speed is constantly changing (up, down, up, down) your direction is constantly changing (up, down, up, down)

A Roller-Coaster is an Energy Ride!?!?!?
When to Consider Force and When to Consider Energy A Roller-Coaster is an Energy Ride!?!?!? If you are looking for the SPEED of the ride, then it is easier to find the HEIGHT GPE KE A Roller-Coaster is a Force Ride!?!?!?? If you are looking for the acting forces (apparent weight), then it is easier to make a Free-Body Diagram (FBD)
