How the Moon Was Formed

How the Moon was formed The moon was formed ~4.5 billion years ago, about 30–50 million years after the origin of the Solar System, out of debris thrown into orbit by a massive collision between a smaller proto-Earth and another planetoid, about the size of Mars.

Lunar Phase The lunar phase or phase of the moon is the shape of the illuminated (sunlit) portion of the Moon as seen by an observer on Earth. The lunar phases change cyclically as the Moon orbits the Earth, according to the changing positions of the Moon and Sun relative to the Earth

Lunar Phases Flipbook Cutout and assemble the lunar phases flip book then staple onto next available page ( you will need this very soon)

You will use a model to determine the cause of the lunar phases Copy into your notebook (leave room for answers!) A friend says there are two new moons during any given cycle. Explain why you agree or disagree. How many days does the moon spend in the full moon phase? (hint: 29.5 days in complete cycle) What are 2 limitations of the model used in this activity? (2 problems)

You will use a model to determine the cause of the lunar phases
Helpful hints for completing this lab Read the background information and review your notes Read the procedures section of the lab packet Chose and record jobs and be responsible for your job! (TEAM!) Keep the paper on a level surface, look from directly across Protractor 101- Use the students who know how to use a protractor to help you (send the mathematician to ask expert for help if needed, look for patterns) Everyone should look at the moon at each phase before you move onto the next phase AS work think about the limitations of this model. ( problems with)
