May03-07 Client: Metalcraft Advisors: Dr. John Lamont Professor Ralph E. Patterson, III Team: Dejan Leginovic Paul Slifka Kevin James Ben Weatherman Jacob Powell Travis Johnson February 13, 2003
2
Agenda What is the Individual Nameplate Inspector project all about?
What are the requirements for the project? How did we solve the problem? Where does the project stand now?
3
What is a Nameplate? Rectangular piece of aluminum
Attached to something for identification Largest is 3” x 5” Smallest is ½” x 1” All about 1/20” thick Attached with adhesive or screws
4
What is a Nameplate?
5
Problem “Singulate” stack of plates Adhesive makes this difficult
Take a picture of each plate Identify errors (if any) List all bad nameplates
6
Solution Break the problem into 2 systems:
Transport System moves the plates around Vision System checks quality of plates
7
Operating Environment
No unusual constraints Light awareness
8
Intended Users and Uses
Individual Nameplate Inspector will be used by the employees of Metalcraft to verify that the nameplates they manufacture are error free
9
Assumptions/Limitations
Users are familiar with a PC Cleaning the system as much as once per day is acceptable The system will not be moved frequently Max cycle time is 2 seconds Inspector will not be able to accommodate every label
10
Risks and Management Meeting times do not work for everyone
Separate project into parts Schedule far in advance Transport and Vision system do not work together Keep both in mind during design Accidentally ing client through provided mailing list
11
Deliverables Complete system
Manual explaining setup of transport system Manual explaining setup of vision system
12
Research Talking to client about what has and has not worked in the past Other vision systems Looking at systems that do similar work

Project Eval On track for completion
Need to start making final system from prototypes
20
Future Work Marking or removal of bad plates Automate machine setup
21
Lessons Learned Good to have several plans
Plagiarize others work when possible More client meetings are helpful
