Human Movement Trucks, Trains, Planes Information Movement Phones, computer ( ), mail Idea Movement How do fads move from place to place? TV, Radio, Magazines

5 Regions What are regions and why are they useful?
Regions can be defined based on the physical and human characteristics. Geographers divide the world into regions to help them interpret information.

6 REGIONS How are Regions similar to and different from other places?
Characterized by a common human or physical property that unifies the area. Regions can be: Formal Functional Perceived Explain to students that while we talk about the 3 different types we will also make identify what Human and Physical characteristics (climate, vegetation, language, trade networks, political units, religion, rivers systems) make up region shown in the various image.

7 Formal Regions Defined by boundaries or similar characteristics.
Boundaries: States, Countries, Cities, or villages Characteristics: political identity, climate, landforms, population, or other facts Ask students Looking at this physical map what characteristics do you notice? Let students throw out some obvious answers then ask... What impact does the river in this map have on the area surrounding it? Students should give you a response related to Economic systems, vegetation in the area, river systems The big SOO WHAT is that this river created an Economic region, a Vegetation Region etc...

8 Formal Region What does these pictures show? Why do they represent a formal region? Japan is a formal region because it shares a common government, language and culture.

9 Functional Regions Regions defined by a function or connection
Linked by transportation, trade or communication newspaper service area for a major city area is the functional region of a newspaper. cell phone coverage area the circulation area School District controlled by a central office, often share the same building and same basic goal.

10 Functional Region Example: Airline hubs
Ask students what predictions/conclusions could you make about the location of these blue dots? Response should include... Large cities/ urban areas... Jobs... Probably do not have extreme climate (livable) Based on your responses above ...What makes this a “region”? The Human factors of an urban area etc...

11 Perceived Regions Regions defined by people’s perception, feelings and images
middle east, the south, the midwest they have no formal boundaries but are understood in our mental maps of the world

12 Perceived Regions What do these images make you think? What factors constitute this region? Religion... Muslim etc..

13 HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How do humans and the environment affect each other?
We depend on it. People depend on rivers for water and transportation. We modify it. We modify our environment by heating and cooling buildings for comfort. We adapt to it. We adapt to the environment by wearing clothing suitable for summer the seasons.

14 LOCATION Where are we? Absolute Location Relative Location
A latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location). Relative Location Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another.

15 Which one is it? The White House is at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave

16 Place Place is what makes one place different than another.
This can include physical characteristics such as the land or human characteristics like the culture of a group of people. Toponym: the name of a place Site: the description of the features of the place Situation: the environmental conditions of the place

17 What is it like there, what kind of place is it?
Human Characteristics What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs. How many people live, work, and visit a place. Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, rivers, etc.), climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil, etc.
