Warm Up Examine the picture on your daily sheet. Answer the corresponding questions.

Types of RNA & Functions
mRNA – created in the nucleus; brings the code from the gene (DNA) to the ribosome tRNA – matches with the codon to bring the correct amino acid to the ribosome to create a protein rRNA – holds the ribosome together with the mRNA to allow for proper translation

Environmental Factors
Environmental Factors can affect traits!! What types of environmental factors can affect your traits? So your physical appearance can change based on the environment! Identical Twins DNA is 100% the same, but will their traits can change based on their environment?
5
Environmental Factors (continued)
The amount of time spent nurturing an organism during its development can impact some characteristics in the offspring. Simulation: LICK THE RAT What happened when the rat was licked more often? What happened when the rat was licked less often?
6
Mutations Specific changes in the DNA of an organism that can change the amino acid sequence, the protein, and even the trait Example: Sickle Cell Anemia
7
Exploring Types of Mutations
With your partner, you will be working through various types of mutations Move to a lab station OR push two desks together to be able to work together through this activity You WILL need a Codon Chart – you can use the one from Day 1 of this unit or you can find it in your textbook We will spend some time discussing the specific types of mutations after you complete this activity
