Bell Ringer Have your homework out and ready to be checked
Silently write the learning targets at the top of your notebook page Answer the following questions: What does “common ancestry” mean? What rock layer are the oldest fossils located in?
2
Agenda Bell Ringer (10 minutes) Inquiry Activity (30 minutes)
Notebook Input (15 minutes) Notebook Output (10 minutes) Independent Practice (15 minutes) Exit Quiz (10 minutes)
3
Inquiry Activity You will analyze three samples of evidence for evolution We have not taken notes on these types of evidence yet, so you may not know the right answer and THAT’S OKAY! Talk with your group and use critical thinking to hypothesize how each piece of evidence could support the theory of evolution Answer the questions for each sample
4
How to Set Up Your Paper Sample A Answer Sample B Sample C
5
Inquiry Activity Expectations
Do not leave your group Talk using scholar voices only with your group members Try your best even if you aren’t sure Work with urgency! 20 minutes End

Evidence for Evolution
1. Fossil Record 2. Comparative Anatomy 3. Comparative Embryology 4. Biogeography 5. Molecular Biology 6. Observed Evolutionary Change
7
Evidence of Evolution:
4. Biogeography
9
Shows geographic distribution of living species Shows how similar organisms evolved to have traits to suit environment
10
5. Molecular Biology Comparing DNA & protein structure
everyone uses the same genetic code! DNA Who are humans most similar to? Add how we will be in the future. Why we want to know who is closest to us for disease and biology studies. *Amino acid sequence similarities among 13 vertebrate species (in %) 10
11
6. Observed Evolutionary Change
Evolutionary change that happens quickly enough for humans to actually be able to see it Drug resistant bacteria 11
12
Have we observed this?

NAME THAT EVIDENCE!!!

Cladogram Cladogram: chart to diagram evolutionary relationships
27
Inquiry Activity Review!!!
Sample A Biogeography Long noses, claws They need long noses and claws to hunt and dig for insects to eat They may have different adaptations because of the environment they live in which causes them to look different
28
Inquiry Activity Review!!!
Sample B Molecular Biology D=1, B=2, E=3, A=4, C=5, G=6, F=7 Organism 1 is most closely related to humans The species have changed over time and adapted to different environments
29
Inquiry Activity Review!!!
Sample C This shows that the moth species changed in order to survive the changing environment The change in tree color made it so that dark moths were better able to survive The moth population might go back to the light color. The light colored moths would have a better chance of survival if the trees are no longer dark.
30
Big Idea: Bacterial Resistance
Turn and Talk—how does this give evidence for the theory of evolution?
31
Summary Table
32
Notebook Output It is February of 2016 and a bacterial infection called Bull Fever spreads rapidly through the student body of Miami Northwestern. Medical magnet students have developed medicine to prevent Bull Fever and all students are given the medicine. However, after a few weeks, the Bull Fever bacteria breaks out again and is now resistant to the medicine. 1. What kind of evidence of evolution is this? 2. How does this scenario demonstrate evolution?

Homework Answer the following questions: What makes humans unique among other animals? What adaptations do we have that make us unique?
