2. What is a CRA?
A Constructed Response Answer is based on a text you read. There are two types of answers:
Literal- The answer is right in the text
Infer- You have to use clues in the text to help you infer the answer.
Before you write an answer, you have to closely read the text to find the evidence to come up with your answer.
Today, we will do that with the text and CRA’s you did on Friday?

3. CRA 1 Why did the King marry Sogolon?
Use details from the text to support your answer.
Before we can find the answer , we have to understand the question. A why question asks for a cause or reason something happened.
Let’s read the text and see if we can find evidence.
After I read the whole text for gist, or general understanding, I closely read to find evidence.

The King married Sogolon because he wanted a son. According to the text, the wise men told him to marry Sogolon who would give him a son, who would one day become a great king and powerful warrior. Thus, having a son to have his family continue to rule was the reason.

Sundiata returned home to Mali because he wanted to save his people from the evil King Sumanguru. According to the text Mali was conquered by an evil King Sumanguru. He made the people of Mali miserable. The evidence shows that Sundiata cared about his people and that is why he came back.
