Unofficial criteria for determining if behavior represents a psychological disorder: Four D's
Deviance deals with an individuals behavior, thoughts, and emotions differing significantly from societal norms. Those who conform to societal standards are often viewed as normal, while those deviating from it are often viewed as abnormal. Distress: A person who is displaying a great deal of depression, anxiety, unhappiness, etc. would be thought of as exhibiting abnormal behavior because their own behavior distresses them. Dysfunction deals with one's inability to continue carrying out daily activities (also known as maladaptive behavior) Danger: Abnormal behavior often results in danger to the individual and/or others around them. ***These four D's aren't always as easy to identify as they seem. Cultural differences must be kept in mind since societal norms vary the world over.***
