Guiding Questions: How are the concerns of a population represented in literature? Prompt: Chose two pieces of literature from this unit and discuss how the authors represent the white settlers’ treatment of Native Americans Prompts help us clarify and word our thesis statements Guiding questions are little hints . They give us something to think about in general terms.

This is time well spent in a timed situation.
Step number 1: Tear apart both! This is time well spent in a timed situation.

Native Americans Literary techniques Guiding Questions: How are the concerns of a population represented in literature? Prompt: Chose two pieces of literature from this unit and discuss how the authors represent the white settlers’ treatment of Native Americans. What did they assert about the whites? No lit terms in prompt means NONE in assertions!! Need a theme!
7
Step 2:Take the prompt and make a thesis:
A common element and background info Because “Man From Washington” and “Lullaby” both tell the story of a Native American who suffers, the authors, Wright and Silko both convey that Native Americans have endured hardships at the hands of the white population. The theme seen in both.
8
Step 3: Outline/brainstorm your essay.
Think about what your two assertions will be. Make sure you can collect evidence which will be easy to analyze. Thus, it must contain literary features. AEA1 “James Wright explores the suffering of Native Americans at the hands of white settlers in his poem.” “___” “
9
Let’s practice: Write a possible thesis statement for possible prompt #2
10
Here is an example from last year
Because both “Lullaby” and “Indian Boarding School: The Runaways” both have protagonists who experience difficulty adapting to a foreign culture, Silko demonstrates that forcing indigenous people to adapt to a new culture causes long lasting social problems.
11
Prompt #3 Because both ___________ and ___________ have protagonists who find solace in the natural world, the authors _____________- and ___________________ assert that Native Americans regard nature as a protective and healing force.
12
Do the same thing for the next prompt
We will share in several minutes
13
Prompt #4 Because both “Pow Wow at the End of the World” and “Indian Boarding School: The Runaways” explore the white settlers’ negative effects on Native Americans, the authors convey the theme that the years of mistreatment by white culture have resulted in Native Americans who view the white culture as a destructive force.
14
Essay writing review Introduction: Introduces topic, gives relevant background information, mentions both pieces of literature and authors’ full names This paragraph ends with your thesis Hints: Once you mention the authors’ full names, after that you can refer to them by their last names only. Make sure you punctuate the literature correctly
15
AEAs Assertions should be worded correctly
Evidence must be punctuated and cited correctly
16
Cohesiveness This means your essay must seamlessly flow together and you must not lose focus. Transitions: Tie your ideas to together Echo words: these are important words from your thesis statement that you will echo throughout your paragraphs and essay to remind or “echo” your idea Reaffirmation: This comes at the end of your body paragraphs (AEAs). This sums up the paragraph and reaffirms how you have proven your assertion. It must NOT be a word for word paraphrase of your assertion! As you write longer essays, this will help your argument stay focused.
17
Conclusion Brings your essay to a logical close
18
Your own diction and syntax
