1 Catalyst – Monday Dec. 1st
Essential Question: What is the difference between transverse waves and longitudinal waves? How do you know that waves carry energy? How do waves transfer energy? 1. How is work and motion related? 2. What is the mass of Carbon-14? 3. Name the three radioactive particles. 4. What is the difference between speed and velocity?

2 Catalyst – Monday Dec. 1st
1. How is work and motion related? In order for something to be work, the object has to move. 2. What is the mass of Carbon-14? Mass = 14 AMU 3. Name the three radioactive particles. alpha, beta, gamma 4. What is the difference between speed and velocity? Speed only gives us a number & velocity gives us the number and direction.

3 Agenda (10) Catalyst & Answers/ Check HW (25) Notes with simulations (30) Wave Poster (20) Poster Share Time!! (5) Exit Ticket

6 Unit 9 - Waves

7 What is a Wave? A wave is a disturbance that carries energy through matter or space. Waves DO work. Write down 2 of these examples 1) Mechanical waves 2) Electromagnetic waves 3) Matter waves energy

8 What do waves look like?

9 Electromagnetic v. Mechanical
Mechanical Waves - Waves that require a medium to travel through Medium – the matter that waves travel through (solid, liquid, and gas) Ex. Slinky wave, water waves, sound waves Electromagnetic - Waves that do not need a medium to travel through Ex. Light waves, radio waves medium, do not need

10 Transverse Waves UP and DOWN Wave
Waves in which the motion of the particles is perpendicular to the motion of the wave. Up and Down Waves. UP and DOWN Wave perpendicular

11 Longitudinal (compressional) Waves
Waves that cause the particles in a medium to vibrate parallel to the direction of wave motion Matter moves with the wave. parallel

12 Crest Crests – highest point of a transverse wave highest

13 Troughs Troughs –lowest parts of a transverse wave lowest

14 Amplitude Amplitude – distance from center to top of the wave.
Amplitude of a wave is related to its energy. The higher the wave, the more energy it carries. The shorter the wave, the less energy it carries. distance

15 Wavelength Wavelength – Distance from one crest to the next crest.

16 Period Period – Time it takes for one full wavelength to pass a certain point (seconds) full

17 Frequency Frequency – Number of full wavelengths that pass a point each second. (Hertz) Wave on a string and fixed end:

19 WAVES POSTER You’ll be grouped together to make a health risk of waves poster. Your group gets to choose from 5 different waves. You can use cell phones to look up your group’s assigned wave to get all the information required. This is what you need…next slide please. Have students get into their groups after going through this slide. However, teacher picks with a random picking strategy.

20 WAVES POSTER Microwaves Radio waves X-rays Gamma rays UV rays
Here are the waves that you can choose from….. Microwaves Radio waves X-rays Gamma rays UV rays Inferred Rays Have groups get 27 seconds to discuss which wave they would want to do a poster on. If two teams want the same one, have them pick a number 1-10.

21 WAVES POSTER Title: (Your Wave/Ray) Definition of the wave/ray.
What its potential health risk/side effects toward people. Include its amplitude, frequency, energy, wavelength and its relationship to health risk. Why is it used. Include three different drawings on your poster.

22 POSTER SHARE!!!! One person from each group should share the poster to limit the amount of getting up and sitting back down time.

23 Prep for Final….. Answer: B

24 Exit Ticket What kind of wave is the wave to the left?
3. Which diagram has both wavelength (λ) and amplitude (A) labeled correctly ?

25 Speed of a Wave Wave Equation
Speed of a Wave (VW)= Wavelength x Frequency

26 Example 1-2 1. A wave has a wavelength of 96 cm and can be described as having a frequency of 2.4 Hz. What is the speed of this wave? 2. A hummingbird beats its wings at a rate of 70 wing beats per second. What is the frequency? Assuming the sound wave moves with a velocity of 350 m/s, what is the wavelength?

27 What are sound waves? Sound is a mechanical wave. It travels through the air. Sound is a longitudinal wave Vibrations create the sound

28 What do Sound Waves Look like?

29 LOUDNESS of Sound The amplitude of a sound wave determines its energy or intensity.

30 Frequency and Pitch The frequency of a sound wave determines it’s pitch. Low frequency = Low pitch High frequency = High pitch

31 What are Light Waves? Electromagnetic waves Very fast – 300,000 km/s
Wavelengths of light are very small.

32 Electromagnetic Spectrum
Complete range of electromagnetic wave frequencies and wavelengths *** In reference tables!!!!****

33 Visible Light Spectrum

34 Wavelengths - Reference Sheet
Individually Turn in at the end of class…

35 Prep for Final….. Answer: ?
