To introduce a quotation smoothly into your own essay, provide the reader with a clear context that sets up your quote. You can do this by using a context sentence or attribution. Context Sentence: John becomes angry and sticks up for his wife, Elizabeth, when Abigail insults her: “You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth! (Miller 22). Attribution: John Proctor exclaims, “You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth!” (Miller 20).

Topic Sentence: Furthermore, these new age requirements have stirred up controversy within the NBA. When Shaq O’Neal was asked for his opinion regarding the league’s newly proposed age requirements, he stated, “What is it that college teaches you? College don’t really teach you to be a great NBA player on and off the court. College teaches you about college. What can better teach you about dealing with the NBA than the NBA?” (Robbins 3). Like Shaq, most players who currently belong to the NBA’s player’s association are adamantly against new age requirements. They feel that the league can prepare the player for their career better than the college game can.
