THE SPACE PROGRAM
5
MERCURY Project Mercury’s Mission: to orbit manned spacecraft around Earth, investigate man’s ability to function in space, to recover both man and spacecraft safely.

Mercury 7
7
GEMINI Project Gemini’s Mission: to stay in space for 2 weeks, rendezvous and dock with orbiting vehicles, perfect entering the atmosphere and landing (Soviet Voskhod program corresponds to our Gemini program).

9
APOLLO Apollo Program Mission: to land an American on the Moon, develop technology to meet national interests in space, achieve preeminence in space for U.S., scientifically explore the Moon, develop capability to work in lunar environment.

APOLLO 13 April 11, 1970: Apollo 13 Lovell, Fred W. Haise, Jr., and John L. Swigert, Jr., encountered difficulties during the flight when an oxygen tank ruptured. Using the power and survival systems of the landing module, they swung behind the Moon and were brought back to Earth by the navigating technology of the mission control center in Houston, TX.

SPACE LABS April 19, 1971: The first space station Salyut 1 launched by the Soviets. May 25, 1973: American space station Skylab (counterpart to Soviet Solyut) was launched. More than 740 hours were spent observing sun and taking pictures of it and the Earth’s surface. Feb. 19, 1986: The Soviet Mir space station launched as the core of the first permanently staffed space station. Nov. 20,1998: The Russians launched the Zarya control module of the International Space Station (ISS). Still in operation.

SPACE SHUTTLES April 12, 1981: The first American space shuttle Columbia launched without payload. The fifth shuttle flight was the first operational mission, deploying two commercial communications satellites. Jan. 28, 1986: Space shuttle Challenger destroyed about one minute after launch because of the failure of a sealant ring on one of its solid boosters. Christa McAuliffe, first teacher in space included with Scobee, Smith, Resnik, Onizuka, McNair, and Jarvis. April 25, 1990: Hubble Space Telescope deployed by space shuttle Discovery. Repairs were made Dec including 6 gyroscopes, 2 solar panels, and a flawed mirror.

SHUTTLES CONT’D Feb. 1, 2003: Space shuttle Columbia destroyed on reentry due to damage from foam insulation hitting a wing 82 seconds after liftoff. Space shuttles are grounded. Astronauts going to the space station are using Russian Soyuz spacecraft. 2008: Atlantis will be the first of NASA's three space shuttles to be retired, most likely in 2008, as the shuttle program winds down. Atlantis' parts will be used by the remaining shuttles, Discovery and Endeavour, until the aging spacecraft are mothballed in 2010.
