Do Now: What is rite of passage? How is it celebrated, if at all, in your culture? Why is it celebrated?

What is a rite of passage?
A rite of passage is an event or ceremony that marks an important transitional period in a person's life, such as birth, puberty, marriage, having children, and death.

A rite of passage for the men of Kenya and Tanzania is to hunt a lion. It is an exemplification of their bravery and marks their transition from boy to man.

Graduation is day for celebrating your completion of four years of highschool and your move to college. It is also considered a rite of passage because of its proximity to the legal age of 18 and is viewed as a crossing point from adolescence into adulthood.
6
Religious: Stephens first communion is a rite of passage to his confirmation. In religion it marks his initiation into group a people who share similar ideas Throughout the book Stephen is growing from child to adult and it is visible through his perception of religion. During his childhood he finds no fault in religion and during the dispute about religion over christmas he assumes that "Dante must be right then" but doesn't actually know what the argument is about. he only knows that Dante is a devout catholic and what she says must be right. He later grows up to reject religion because of the idea that it does not allow a person to live to their fullest capability.
7
Sexually: At the age of sixteen Stephen begins visiting the brothel. Although this incident prompts Stephen to focus on religion and make his life about being pure it is symbolic of his growth from boy to man because of his acknowledgment of his sexual desires The guilt he felt for his actions can also be considered a rite of passage because he is able to accept the consequences of what he has done and seeks to fix something he finds wrong in himself.
8
Familial: Stephen's father shares with him a story about his childhood and a moment in which he was able to bond with his father (Stephen's grandfather). This is a rite of passage for Stephen as it shows that his father no longer sees him as a young boy through his father confiding in him (Stephen).
9
Boy to Man/Artist: As a young boy Stephen showed interest in the arts and was even in a school play. Before the play started he was thinking to himself and "for one rare moment he seemed to be clothes in the real apparel of boyhood," which marked his realization of his own maturation Stephens transition from boy to man, and his transition from man to artist are essentially one and the same. Initially, he mimics others behaviors (father's, philosophers, and priests). However, as the story goes on, he makes his own decisions, and comes up with his own conclusion, as an artist would.
