Simple Sentences Simple sentences are independent clauses. They express a complete thought. Simple sentences have at least one subject and at least one verb. Subject: who or what the sentence is about Verb: what the subject is doing

Simple Sentence Patterns
Simple sentences can be formed in four ways: SV The boy ran to the store. SSV The boy and the girl ran to the store. SVV The boy ran to the store and bought milk. SSVV The boy and the girl ran to the store and bought milk.

Key Terms A clause is a group of words that go together AND have a subject and a verb. Sentences are also called independent clauses. Independent Clauses- are complete clauses that can stand alone as sentences, or complete thoughts. Dependent clauses cannot stand alone and must be a part of an independent clause. These are incomplete thoughts. Simple Sentences are one kind of independent clause. It is called simple because of its structure.
