1 Dependent clauses in a pair or series
The Art of Style Sentences: Pattern 8

2 What does this sentence mean?
Dependent Clauses A part of a sentence (clause) that does not make sense by itself, but adds information to the main clause. Pair or series 2 or more The dependent clauses can occur either at the beginning or the end of the sentence

3 What does this look like?
Dependent Clause 2 Independent Clause If it stops raining, if it isn’t muddy, if there is time, we can play football. Dependent Clause 3 Dependent Clause 1

4 PATTERN 8 MODEL (Mulga Bill’s Bicycle, A.B. Patterson)
when we were together, when you said you felt so happy you could die, [I] told myself that you were right for me (Somebody that I used to know, Gotye) There’s nothing walks, or jumps, or runs… But what I’ll sit, while hide will hold, and girths and straps are tight (Mulga Bill’s Bicycle, A.B. Patterson)

5 Do you have to use the same connective?
No! but… Think back to language devices – what does repetition do? Part of styling sentences is to engage the audience and make your writing sound more interesting and cohesive, so make sure you are considering how repetition (or no repetition) can add or detract from your writing. So have a go at writing some of your own. Try writing one sentence with a repeating connective, and another without a repeating connective.
