ACT Prep: Appositives Presented by Katelin Martinez

2 Origins/Connections Apposition is the coming together of two nouns meaning resembling the same person, place or thing Just like juxtaposition It compares the two things that are in reference to one another for the exact reason of direct comparison or contrast Contrast is to show the difference or unlikeness from one noun to another

3 Examples •"The hangman, a grey-haired convict in the white uniform of the prison, was waiting beside his machine." (George Orwell, "A Hanging," 1931) The phrase “The hangman was waiting beside his machine” is a way of writing the sentence but when the hangman is described as “ a grey- haired convict in the white uniform of the prison” Orwell uses apposition to create a better narrative of the character.
