Objective: SWBAT analyze comma placement for explanatory and appositive phrases. Essential: How are commas used to set off explanatory and appositive phrases?

What is the purpose of commas used in explanatory and appositive sentences?
Commas are used to set off explanatory and appositive phrases from the rest of the sentence. Explanatory and appositive phrases contain information that is NOT necessary to the basic meaning of the sentence. This unnecessary information is set off by commas in the sentence.

Explanatory Phrases Explanatory phrases are words that are used to explain a term in a sentence. Commas are used to set off the explanatory phrase: Ex. The Grand Canyon, located in northwestern Arizona, is an incredible place.

Appositive Phrases Appositive phrases are words used to define a term in the sentence. Commas are used to set off an appositive phrase. EX. Bob, my classmate, visited the Grand Canyon.
