4
What is significance? Historical significance is the process used to evaluate what was significant about selected events, people, and developments in the past Historians use different sets of criteria to help them make judgements about significance Significance has been called the forgotten concept in history, no doubt because it can be challenging for both teacher and students
5
Can We create a criteria for significance?
How it affected the future How many people it affected? Do we learn about it at school? How has it changed our lives today? How has it changed the world we live in today? Does it make a difference to me? How many people remember it? Is it still important today? What was the impact/knock on effect after? Did it cause other events to happen? How long will the impact last? Will it still affect us in the future?
6
Debating the significant events
How do we debate? Is this an argument?
7
What should an argument look like?
8
Following lessons We are going to look at some smaller known events from history, research them, present an argument and debate it in a league until we get to a winner We must stick to our criteria and explore the different ways something can be seen as significant
