Quality of Life Quality of Life- The degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. What three characteristics determine a person’s quality of life? Physical Health Mental Health Social Health

Wellness Wellness- A broad view of health that is seen as the combination of physical, mental, and emotional health. Wellness cannot be achieved by someone unless they realize that all three aspects of health (health triangle) are equally important to their overall well-being.

Illness-Wellness Continuum
What is a continuum? A gradual progression through many stages between one extreme and another.

Illness-Wellness Continuum- is a model that illustrates the full range of health between the extremes of illness and wellness. Each person’s overall wellness (physical, mental, and emotional) is marked by some point on the continuum. Individuals can move in either direction on the continuum. Moving themselves closer to illness or wellness. Individual choices controls where a person falls on the continuum.

Risk Factors Risk Factor- is any action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other negative outcomes. What are some common risk factors that you may face?

Physical Social Environmental

Risk Factors Heredity- all of the traits that are passed biologically from parent to child. Disability- any physical or mental impairment that limits or reduces a person’s ability to participate in normal activities. Examples: Muscular Dystrophy High Blood Pressure Breast Cancer Diabetes

Risk Factors Environment- all of the physical and social conditions surrounding a person and the influences they have on the person. Physical Environment- your outdoor and indoor surroundings. Outdoor examples: Air quality Water quality Radiation from the sun Poisonous wastes Loud noise Indoor examples: Home School Factories Offices

Risk Factors Social Environment- The people that surround you. Friends, family, classmates and others. Examples: Family influences Peer Pressure

Risk Factors Culture- the beliefs and patterns of behavior that are shared by a group of people and passed from generation to generation. Examples: Language Food Choices Attitudes Traditions Religion Can any of these have an impact on a person’s health?

Exit Slip Evaluate where you fall on the health continuum today and devise a plan for moving yourself closer to high level wellness. What do choices have to do with the illness-wellness continuum and risk factors?
