Rescue Alex Hernandez Chandler English Kasea Thornberry Nick Wrenn

2 What is Rescue? To save someone from a dangerous or distressing situation. Rescue can include saving another person from harm, saving a person from mental/emotional suffering, or even saving oneself.

3 What is Rescue? Two examples in other works are:
In the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, in Part 7, the pilot and his boy rescued the Mariner from drowning. The Mariner who appeared dead in the water began to move his mouth. The Hermit then believed he was the Devil, and began to pray for the Mariner and free him of his curse.

4 What is Rescue? In Spiderman 3, he rescued himself when he discovered that the black suit was bad for him. He then gave up the black suit even though it gave him more power.

5 Thesis Statement Throughout the novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses the theme of rescue, physically and emotionally, to undo the madness created by Victor Frankenstein himself.

6 Throughout the novel there were multiple cases of physical rescue but these were the most crucial to the story. “Upon hearing this he appeared satisfied and consented to come on board” (Shelley 10). The rescue of Frankenstein is essential to the novel because he acts as an example to Walton and his crew and ultimately saves their lives.

7 Aside from the physical deaths in the story, Victor himself was saved from mental and emotional stress on multiple occasions. “ ‘My father!’ cried I, while every feature and every muscle was relaxed from anguish to pleasure” (Shelley 171). Victor has experienced yet another death of a person close to him, and became delusional and sick. Upon his father’s arrival, his health was restored, therefore rescuing him.

8 Self rescue is portrayed through Frankenstein's decision towards the end of the novel.
“I am alone and miserable ; man will not associate with me; but one as deformed and horrible as myself would not deny herself to me. My companion must be of the same species and have the same defects. This being you must create” (Shelley 133). In this quote, the creature is admitting to being alone and miserable. He is saying that a companion would save him from his state of depression and loneliness.

9 Self rescue is portrayed through Frankenstein's decision towards the end of the novel.
“I shall die, and what I now feel be no longer felt. Soon these burning memories will be extinct” (Shelley 213). The creature’s decision to kill himself shows how terrible his life has been and that killing himself would rescue him from his pain and guilt.
