Atmosphere 1.3 RSG-B Answers

1.3 RSG-B Atmosphere 1. Gases in the atmosphere can absorb, reflect, or transmit different types of radiation differently. Most of the gases in the atmosphere transmit visible light. Certain gases affect types of radiation that are invisible. 2. Ultraviolet Radiation—more energy than visible light, can cause sunburn and damage tissue; Both—waves of energy; Infrared Radiation—less energy than visible light; warms materials that absorb it

1.3 RSG-B Atmosphere 3. gas that forms in the stratosphere; molecule consists of three oxygen atoms; breaks apart and forms in the stratosphere in a complex cycle; layer protects Earth by absorbing UV radiation 4. The ozone layer absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, while allowing other types of radiation, such as visible light and infrared radiation, to get through.

1.3 RSG-B Atmosphere 5. Students should circle all three pictures. 6. The gases slow the movement of energy away from Earth, allowing the average temperature to be 15º C rather than –18º C. 7. caused by greenhouse gases; gases absorb infrared radiation; gases give off infrared radiation; reminded scientists of the way heat is trapped in a greenhouse

1.3 RSG-B Atmosphere 8. the gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and others) that cause the greenhouse effect 9. Solar radiation heats Earth’s surface, and the surface gives off infrared radiation. The greenhouse gases absorb some of the infrared radiation. The gases release the radiation, and some of it warms Earth.
