3 TASK - You will identify incentives used at home and school
TASK - You will identify incentives used at home and school. You will identify which incentives are positive and which are negative. You will discuss which incentives work to influence their behavior and choices and which incentives do not work.

4 So what is an incentive? When parents or teachers want you to behave in a certain way, they sometimes offer incentives to encourage you or influence you to make a choice. Offering incentives is one way to get people to do what you want. When a teacher offers stickers to students who finish their work on time, this is an incentive. When a parent offers ice cream to their children to finish their vegetables, this is an incentive. Incentives often work to influence people's behavior. However, not all incentives work for all people. Let's learn more about the incentives offered to you. Which incentives influence you? Which do not?

5 With a partner - BRAINSTORM
What are some incentives for doing well in school? What are some incentives for doing things at home? Then discuss as a class

6 Identify the Rewards and Incentives
On one piece of paper shared between you and your partner – read the different scenarios on the handout and respond to the questions using COMPLETE SENTENCES! Pass out the handout that says – Read the stories below – Do not let students write on this copy

7 What is the author’s claim about incentives?
Watch the short video clip – As you watch consider – What is the author’s claim about incentives? What evidence is there that these incentives work or don’t work? CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W A Introduce precise, knowledgeable claim(s), establish the significance of the claim(s), distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and create an organization that logically sequences claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence.

8 Read the article What is the author’s claim? Cite evidence from the article that demonstrates/supports the author’s claim. Be sure to CITE! Your turn – Write a detailed paragraph What is YOUR opinion about offering incentives at school? What type of incentives could/would work? BE specific! Which type of incentives do not/would not work? Support your ideas with evidence from the article and/or the film and/or personal experience. Be sure to cite information you take from either source! What are some incentives employers use or could use to keep workers productive and happy? CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
