1 Walnut High School Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science

2 Why Become Part of the WHS PLTW Biomedical Science
PLTW prepares students for the global economy through rigorous, standards- based curricula. PLTW’s approach centers on hands-on, real world projects. Four-course Biomedical Science sequence that allows students to investigate the roles of biomedical professional. Students work with the same high tech, cutting edge tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs. Students use technology on a daily basis ranging from computerized lab equipment to accessing the curriculum, activities, assessments, grading and discussion boards.

3 PLTW Biomedical Science Foundation Courses – Principles of Biomedical Sciences Honors (PBS)
In PBS, students investigate various health conditions. They determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person. They investigate lifestyle choices & medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities & projects introduce students to human physiology, medicine & research processes. This course provides an overview of all of the courses in the Biomedical Sciences program. Occurs in the 10th grade.

4 PLTW Biomedical Science Foundation Courses – Human Body Systems Honors (HBS)
Students examine the interactions of human body systems. Students design experiments, investigate the structures & functions of the human body. Students use data acquisition software to monitor body functions. Student explore science in action. Occurs in the 11th grade.

5 PLTW Biomedical Science Foundation Courses – Medical Interventions Honors (MI)
Students investigate a variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of disease. The course is a “How-To” manual for maintaining overall health & homeostasis in the body. Students explore how to prevent & fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose & treat cancer; & prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices & diagnostics. Occurs in the 12th grade.

6 PLTW Biomedical Science Capstone Course – Biomedical Innovations Honors (BI)
Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century. Students work through progressively challenging, open-ended problems, addressing topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering and public health. Students have the opportunity to work on an independent project and present their work to an audience of STEM professionals. Occurs in the 12th grade.

7 PLTW Biomedical Science - Assessments
Each PLTW course concludes with a national End-of-Course assessment. In 2018, 98% of Walnut high School PLTW students successfully completed these exams.
