Warm-Up 2/26/14 What patterns or relationships did you notice between the following criteria in the Gas Law Lab on Monday? Pressure and Volume (Marshmallow Mafia) Pressure and Temperature (Can Crusher) Volume and Temperature (Syringes) State relationship like: As pressure increased, volume ______________.
2
Pressure and Volume (Marshmallow Mafia)
Increase P by pushing syringe, Decrease V Pressure and Temperature (Can Crusher) Decrease T of gas in can, Decrease P of gas Volume and Temperature (Syringes) Increase T of gas in syringe, Increase V of gas
3
The Gas Laws Wednesday 2/26/14
4
The Gas Laws We can relate temperature, pressure, and volume of gases with some simple equations or laws Charles’ Law Boyle’s Law Guy Lussac’s Law REMEMBER: THESE ARE ONLY FOR GASES!!
5
Special Notes About Using the Gas Laws
Units for a certain variable (P, T, or V) must match. “Constant” means it does not change (ignore it!) The Laws describe “ideal” gases, and are best seen as estimations.
6
Standard Temp. & Press. (STP)
Standard temperature and pressure (STP) Standard temperature is 0°C ( K). Standard pressure is 1 atm
7
Pressure and Volume (Boyle)
The graph of Boyle’s law shows that the pressure of a gas varies inversely with its volume at constant temperature.
8
Pressure & Volume (Boyle)
1 LOW P LARGE V P1 V1 = P2V2 2 HIGH P LOW V
9
Example Problem: Boyle’s Law
Pressure = 2 bar Pressure = 4 bar Volume = 6 liters Volume = ___ liters P1 V1 = P2V2
10
Temperature & Volume(Charles)
The graph of Charles’s law shows that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its Kelvin temperature under constant pressure.
11
Example Problem: Charles’ Law
T1 T2 V2 V1 V1 = V2 T1 T2 T2 = 10 V2 = ___ T1 = 40 V1 = 120
12
Pressure and Temperature (G.L.)
The graph of Gay-Lussac’s Law shows that the pressure of a gas is directly proportional to its Kelvin temperature under constant volume.
13
Pressure and Temperature (G.L.)
14
Example Problem: Gay-Lussac’s
15
Your Job Complete the Gas Law Calculation problems.
These will be collected AND checked by me for right answers on FRIDAY. QUIZ tomorrow on Gas Properties and Behaviors, and Conversions
