Questions to write Why did President Wilson change his mind and enter the war? What were some of the disadvantages the American’s faced in the war? What were some of the advantages the American’s faced in the war?

America isn’t ready? America had only 100,000 men in uniform and could not match the other world powers. They sent 14,500 men led by General Pershing to Europe. Congress passed the Selective Service Act in authorizing a draft of young men. 24 Million people registered for the draft of which 3 million were sent to war.

America isn’t ready America needed to raise money quickly to keep up with war costs. They sold Liberty Bonds which were temporary loans from individuals.

The War At home American’s at home had to help in the war effort. Henry Ford built 16,000 tanks and 20,000 tractors for the United States.

Not combat ready? Draftees needed to be trained and needed time. Sometimes this was not possible. American troops came into the war fresh and energized compared to their European allies.

Russia turns the tide for Germany
Vladimir Lenin overthrew the Russian government and took control. He made peace with Germany and gave them land that contained industry and rich farmland. The Germans now could now focus all of there troops against and France/England.

British lines break After 4 years the Germans broke through the British trenches and marched towards Paris. American troops came to the rescue and stopped the German advance. Allies starts to make stronger tanks to use and airplanes to scout for enemy locations. The Germans create floating airships called zeppelins to drop bombs from above.

Ending the war With America the Allies were pushing the Germans back. Austria-Hungry fell apart and the Germans knew they had been defeated. The Kaiser fled Germany to Holland and a new leader signed an armistice (cease fire) A influenza epidemic broke out and killed more people worldwide than the battles.

Paris peace conference
Germany was defeated and their surrender was being drawn up. Woodrow Wilson came up with his Fourteen Points, which was named after the number of provisions it had. His goal was not to punish Germany but to ensure peace. Came up with the idea for the League of Nations. This was a group of countries that would work together for peace.

The leaders, against Wilson’s will, divided up Europe and took land from Austria-Hungry, Germany and Russia. Italy did not get the land they were promised and Vittorio Orlando was forced to resign his post to a hostile Italy. They made the Germans except full responsibility for the war and pay crippling reparations. (payments for causing a suffering)

Paris peace conference
Eventually they agreed on the Versailles Treaty. A deal so bad: The Germans refused to sign it until threatened by a French invasion. The United States congress would not approve it and decided to make separate peace treaties.
