2. Individualism vs. Collectivism
Regards every man as an individual, free being who possesses an inalienable right to his own life, a right derived from his nature as a rational being
A civilized society can be achieved only by recognizing individual rights

3. Collectivism
Individual is owned by the group
No right to personal existence
No right to pursue personal gain or personal growth
Man must act and think collectively for the sake of what is called “the common good”

4. Tyranny
Absolute authority, especially when exercised unjustly or cruelly

5. Altruism vs. Egoism Altruism
Man has no right to exist for his own sake
service to others is the only justification of his existence
Self sacrifice is the highest moral duty
self is a standard of evil, selfless is the standard of good

6. Egoism
Each man’s primary moral obligation is to achieve his own welfare, well-being, or self interest
He should be “selfish” in the sense of being the beneficiary of his own actions
Concern with one’s own needs

7. Conformity
The act of bringing oneself into harmony or agreement with others
Adhering to conventional behavior

8. Utopia
A perfect state or place
An idealistic scheme for social and political reform.
Anthem is a dystopia: shows world as it should NOT be

9. Design Your Own Society
With your group, come up with what you believe to be the best form of government, degree of technology, social relationships, quality of life, and education.
Examples of questions you might want to ask yourselves:
Government: Who would rule and how would they rule?
Degree of Technology: Would technology be limitless or would there be restrictions?
Social Relationships: Are there any rules about social relationships? Can anyone and everyone be friends or married?
Quality of life: Would you have five day work weeks?
Education: What kind of education institutions would be available? Who would be able to attend? Would it be mandatory? To what age would one attend? Would it cost money?
