TEKS Focus: (5)(B) Construct congruent segments, congruent angles, a segment bisector, an angle bisector, perpendicular lines, the perpendicular bisector of a line segment, and a line parallel to a given line through a point not on a line using a compass and a straightedge. (1)(C) Select tools, including real objects, manipulatives paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimations, and number sense as appropriate, to solve problems. (1)(E) Create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas.

Constructions You can make a sketch or measure and draw a segment. These may not be exact. A construction is a way of creating a figure that is more precise. Geometric constructions use a compass and straightedge.

The shortest segment from a point to a line is perpendicular to the line. This fact is used to define the distance from a point to a line as the length of the perpendicular segment from the point to the line.
