Explain how molecules move across a semi-permeable membrane.
Topic: Osmosis Explain how molecules move across a semi-permeable membrane.
4
Key Idea #1 Osmosis is the movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane.
5
Key Idea #2 Regulating water flow is important factor in maintaining homeostasis. Too much water could cause the cell to grow bigger & burst and not enough would cause the cell to shrink.
6
Key Idea #3 If two solutions are separated by a selectively permeable membrane that allows only water to diffuse across it, the solutes can not diffuse! Instead, water will diffuse to even out the concentrations.
7
Key Idea #4 KEY IDEA #4: The tonicity of the solution can affect a cell. The effect is different depending on if the concentration of the solution is isotonic, hypertonic, or hypotonic.
8
Cell will get bigger and possibly burst Cell will shrivel
Water moves in and out equally; cell is in equilibrium Cell will shrivel
