3. Prussian Customs Union/The Zollverein
After 1815, the 39 German states managed their own economies.
There were lots of trade barriers, tariffs etc.
Even within a single state their was a large amount of internal barriers.
1815, Prussian Customs Union was brought in – replaced complex system with one tariff for Prussian frontier.
Start of free trade (more unified action).
Some of Prussia’s neighbours asked to join the union.
The enlarged Custom’s Union became the ‘Zollverein’ (meaning customs union).
Covered 18 states and 13 million people.
Starting unifying currency and weights and measures.
