Federal Republic – power is divided among different levels
Parliamentary Democracy – The president is the chief of state, but the prime minister holds executive power
The government is having conflict with various religious groups

Communist State – Government controls most of the land and businesses
Oligarchy – beyond the local level, typically only members of the Chinese communist party (6% of China) can participate in the government

Emperor is a “symbolic leader” who represents Japan’s history and culture
