4 Outcomes All must understand the need for laws in society and will answer a GCSE question in a record time Most should understand the need for laws and justice in society Some could use religious laws to address modern moral dilemmas

5 Law and Justice Laws are rules about how people are expected to behave. Justice is about making sure that what is right happens in society and that the good are rewarded and the evil punished. The court and the police make sure that all members of society obey the law

6 Activity 1: Brains shower on why do people need laws 3minutes

7 Society needs laws because:
People need to know how other people will behave People need to be sure that what they make from their work will not be stolen from them or else they will not bother to work People need to be protected from violence (protect the weak from the strong) In an advance civilisation like the UK we need laws to keep everything organised. Without rules they would be chaos In a democracy like the UK we need laws to protect our civil liberties

8 St Thomas Aquinas said an unjust law is not a proper law because;
If a law is unjust people will feel they have the right to break it If some laws are unjust people may start to think that all laws are unjust. If a law is unjust people will not obey it If laws do not create a just society then it could cause a civil war e.g American Civil War or Kosovo Can anyone think of laws they feel are unjust PAST or PRESENT Link – Law and Justice? If a law is unjust, they will disrupt rather than unite society. To achieve justice the UK has a Legal Aid system that uses taxes to give free legal help to less well off people accused of crimes

9 GCSE question to answer :
Explain why there is a need to be a connection between laws and justice A- what type of question is that B-how many marks C-answer the question in only 4 minutes

10 trivia: Crime and punishment
A sin is an act against the will of god, e,g rich people refusing to share with the poor. A crime is an act against the law, e.g: Martin Luther King sitting on a bus seat reserved for the white people. Sins are not always crimes and crimes are not always sins, which means that there can be laws that are not just. It is important for laws to be just so that people feel it is right to obey them.

11 Religion: Crime and punishment
Reflection: What do you think about the ground rules today? Have they help you in the last four years in FHS? What of the importance of laws? How do we enforce them?
