BLOOD
2
Function of Blood? To carry nutrients and oxygen to cells.
To carry carbon dioxide and other waste products from cells.
3
Parts of Blood Plasma = liquid portion (55%) Blood Cells (45%):
Erythrocytes (RBC’s) Leukocytes (WBC’s) Thrombocytes (Platelets)
4
Erythrocytes (RBC’s) Made of Red Marrow of our bones.
Constantly being made. They live for about 4 months and die. They are removed by the spleen. Contain red pigment called hemoglobin.
5
Leukocytes (WBC’s) Larger and fewer than RBC’s. Made in bone marrow.
Live for years. “Fighters of disease” Help to form pus (combination of dead invading cells and WBC’s)
6
How do Leukocytes fight disease?
Phagocytes = engulf unwanted organisms. Antibodies = substance that destroys the organism.
7
Thrombocytes (Platelets)
Fragments of cells that are released from marrow. Cause blood to clot using fibrin (a network of threadlike material that plugs the torn area.)
