mETAPHOR COMPARISION – WHEN ONE THING IS COMPARED TO SOMETHING. WHEN YOU SAY SOMETHING IS SOMETHING ELSE. Eg – Breaking the horse, Breaking Brett. -

Emotive language ***** - positive or negative Strong ideas attached to particular words, that elicit an emotional response. Hell My dog died Wedding Day

Negative / positive connotations
= Linked to emotive language. I’m going to Disneyland – Disneyland has positive connotations attached to it. The whole sentence could be emotive, as it shows the joy of a small child excitedly delivering the sentence.

humour Something funny, it will make you laugh.
The composer is using humour… (but why?) Make light of an issue, or to engage with an audience.

Direct quotations “When something is in speech marks – direct speech” – Emma. Political Speech – quote Tony Abbott – AUTHORITY. Science – quote Einstein – AUTHORITY. Giving an accurate point of view. AUTHENTIC?

REPETITION The same word, or same idea repeated throughout a text.
- CHANGE – Shows the audience that it is an important idea.

MODALITY ***** Strength of the language used –
High modality = high certainty Low modality = low certainty ---- High modality = positive ideas around change, change will occur. Low modality = may indicate hesitation to change, indifference to change. Strong language or wishy washy?

humour Something funny; something that engages the audience and allows them to engage with the issues in a text because they are connected to it.

Body language In a visual text, look at how people are standing, sitting, doing whatever it is they’re doing.

colour Colour symbolism – Black and white – ABSENCE OF COLOUR.
- Revealing attitudes about change.

font Look at the font – what does it reveal? What ideas are attached to it – this may reveal feelings. - Size of font as well is important. What ideas are attached to this font?
