Copy and correct the following sentence…
Get the essay we were working on yesterday (“Advice to Youth”), along with your notes, out
on your desk.

2. For 2 of the paragraphs (your choice)
Analyze the satire…SO:
1. Write the paragraph you are referring to on the side of the paper.
2. Identify: What is the “tried and true” belief we always tell children that Twain is making fun of?
3. Analyze: HOW does he make fun of it? What does he do/refer to in his writing?

3. Turn to your partner… Talk to your partner about your examples. Check:
Is your partner identifying the value/belief? Do you agree that Twain is making fun of that belief?
Does your partner explain HOW Twain makes fun of it? Does your partner use a specific example?

4. The most important question…
Remember, the author of satire is usually trying to either CHANGE something about what they’re making fun of or MAKE PEOPLE THINK CRITICALLY about it.
So…what is the big picture here? In making fun of all these things we tell children, what is he trying to say? What is he trying to change or make us think about?
