The corruption of the overseers led to change in select vestries.
In 1817 there was a select committee in the house of commons which had concerns about the system. This led to a report and an act being produced in 1819 which allowed parishes to set up select vestries. These were committees set up in each parish which were responsible for Poor Law administration. There were concerns over corruption within the system as contracts for supplying food and beer often went to local traders or these vestries which was ultimately exploiting the system. However by parishes had adopted the act. Corruption in the system – * In 1832, 11 of the 20 members of the Morpeth vestry had vested interests in the sale of beer. They believed that generous relief payments ended up being spent in alehouses.
