Welcome to P6 Meet The Parents Session ~ Language Arts

2 The Language Arts Framework
Language Arts encompasses six strands namely: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and visually representing

3 Reading : Progression in reading comprehension skills through differentiated curriculum to meet the needs of pupils Strategies: Annotation (reinforcement) Identify contextual clues Make inferences Summarise main ideas Unpack “difficult” vocabulary Socratic Questioning Deepen understanding of text Be a critical thinker Reflect on one’s understanding Differentiation: Texts of suitable level of difficulty are used to prepare pupils for PSLE Appropriate amount of scaffolding is provided Appropriate levels of questions are asked to deepen understanding

4 Writing : Progression in writing skills (narratives) through differentiated curriculum to meet the needs of pupils Differentiation: Appropriate amount of scaffolding is provided Appropriate development of vocabulary power Collaboration among pupils More thematic writing practices Strategies: Building the field through gaining shared experience Reading passages, news reports, etc. Use of ICT (video clip, news, internet, etc.) Areas of focus (reinforcement) Plot development Characterisation Setting Introduction Lengthy Irrelevant Plot Development Rising Action, Climax & Falling Action – Main part of story Short – in a hurry to finish Recommendation: Narrative hooks for introduction Expand rising rising action, climax & falling action Use 5 senses to describe Describe the what is happening / feelings through actions Enhance reading and writing connection

5 Writing : Progression in writing skills (situational writing) through differentiated curriculum to meet the needs of pupils Strategies: Building the understanding of purpose, audience and context Reading news reports, advertisements, posters, newsletters, etc. Developing media literacy skills Areas of focus Text Types for SW Differentiation: Appropriate level of Teacher modelling Appropriate amount of scaffolding is provided More practices to prepare for PSLE

Conversation (SA1 and Prelims) A Common Theme An example of a picture for discussion
