1 Aim: How can we explain the interior of the Earth? Learning Target:
I can label all of the layers of the Earth I can describe the different properties of layers of the Earth.

2 How do we know about interior of the Earth?
Properties of the earth’s interior inferred through seismic (earthquake) waves Earth is composed of a number of layers

3 The Crust The outermost layer Mostly solid rock

4 The Mantle The thickest layer. Contains ~80% of Earth’s volume.
Separated from the crust by thin interface called the Moho.

5 The Lithosphere The whole crust and the very uppermost part of the mantle (called the rigid mantle)

6 The Asthenosphere A portion of the mantle below the lithosphere.
Believed to be similar to plastic – partly molten, partly solid. Magma and lava originate here.

7 The Outer Core Liquid metal – the only liquid layer
3,000-5,000 degrees Kelvin

8 The Inner Core Most of the inner core believed to be solid iron
5,000+ degrees Kelvin

9

10 On Your Own Label the different layers of the Earth in your Notes.

11 Question . The composition of some meteorites supports the inference that the Earth's core is composed of aluminum and calcium iron and nickel silicon and oxygen magnesium and potassium

12 Turn and Talk Describe how the temperature changes as the depth increases.

13 Worksheet on Layers
