2 What shapes culture? Culture is strongly influenced by a number of factors or forces. Four forces in particular are: Economic Geographical Historical Political

3 Economic Factors The way people make a living represents an important cultural component of their existence. Jobs performed, occupations pursued, products produced, services provided Big economic events always make headlines. How do you think the following events would affect your lifestyle or community? Price of oil Interest rates Mortgage rates Exchange rate of CDN dollar New business opening Industry in decline

4 Geographical Factors Factors such as the natural environment, locations where we live and accessible resources can influence the way we make a living and many other aspects of our lives: (sports, recreation, what we eat, clothing) How have the following factors influenced the development of cultural traits in our province? Marine resources Forests Water resources Minerals Oil Soil

5 Historical Factors History relates to everyday lives. Many customs have been passed on down to us from our ancestors such as; holidays, recreational activities and sports traditions. History has influenced what country we belong to and what language(s) we speak.

6 Political Factors The decisions made by municipal, provincial and federal governments directly impact our lives and therefore shape our culture. How might the following political decisions influence our way of life and culture? Taxes are lowered or raised New law has passed (driving age increased to 21) Delivery of government services are changed
