Keyboarding Advancing Keyboarding Skill Development in Information Processing Source:
2
Objectives To use touch keyboarding skills in the efficient use of the computer keyboard. Touch keyboarding requires the operation of the alphanumeric keyboard without looking at the keyboard. To develop an appreciation for the benefits of having good keyboarding skills IP - Ms. C. Norris
3
REVIEW Review of all alphabetic, numeric, punctuation and basic service keys on the keyboard. – In Class Exercise The difference between backspace and delete? How do you switch from insert to strikeover mode? IP - Ms. C. Norris

REVIEW Position of Body and Hands
Correct position is natural, easy and relaxed. Your feet should be on the floor, slightly apart for better body balance. Your elbows should be in a natural position at the sides of the body. Your fingers should be well curved over the guide keys. Sit one hand span from your keyboard. IP - Ms. C. Norris
5
REVIEW Correct Key Stroking Technique
The fingers should be well curved and in an upright position with the fingertips lightly touching the home of guide keys. The hands should be ``turned in `` toward each other slightly so that the fingers will be in an upright (not slanting) position. The wrists and arms should be held in a relatively motionless position - most of the keystroking action should be in the movement of the fingers. The keys should be struck with a direct, quick, snap stroke. IP - Ms. C. Norris
6
REVIEW Spacing Technique
Only the right thumb should move. The other fingers should remain curved over their home keys. Strike the space bar immediately after the last letter of the word is struck, just as if it were part of the word. Keep the thumb close to the space bar to avoid excess motion of the thumb. IP - Ms. C. Norris
7
REVIEW Shifting Technique
Operate the shift keys with the little fingers, while other fingers remain in position over their home keys. Move the little finger from its position over the guide key outward and downward to the shift key. While holding down the shift key strike the letter to be capitalized WITH THE OPPOSITE HAND and then quickly release both keys and return to home row. IP - Ms. C. Norris

Expectations in IP The first five to ten minutes of every class will be used for keyboarding skill-building activities such as drills and timed writings. Every day you will keep a log of what you keyed during the warm up period. Do not be late for class, or this portion of your mark will dwindle away….. IP - Ms. C. Norris
9
Timings At least once a week, we will complete a timing in class.
After the timing is complete, print a copy, proofread it yourself and then ask a peer to check your proofreading. RECORD your timing every week. It does not matter if it is not as good as a prior timing, but it is important to see your growth as the year progresses. Save all of your timings!! I recommend you attach them to your record sheet. You will be asked to hand them in at midterm and end of term for evaluation. IP - Ms. C. Norris
