New France after the Conquest
The capitulation of New France Document signed Sept. 8th, 1760

The document set conditions on the French:
French armies and militias had to surrender their weapons Canadiens were only allowed to sell their lands to the British Canadiens had to swear an oath of allegiance and loyalty to the British

The document also protected the Canadiens:
they retained ownership of their property and could not be deported were free to continue to practice the Catholic religion most religious orders and leaders were allowed to continue their work (social education, religious practices, evangelization)

Effects of the Conquest:
Approximately 4000 people returned to France in 1760 mainly soldiers, officers, governor general, intendant, other members of the Sovereign Council, and other officials

Although the war was over in New France, it was still going on in Europe.
Therefore, General Amherst established a military rule until France and Great Britain would sign a peace treaty. What is military rule? It is when the military authorities (usually generals) are administrating a country (in control).

Effects of the military government on the colony’s economy:
- the arrival of adventurers interested in exploiting resources - the arrival of British merchants

In February 1763, France and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris.
New France was officially conquered and now belonged to the British. Canadiens became British subjects French culture and religion was still permitted Later that year, the military rule was over.
